What Causes Thinning Eyebrows?
One’s genes are the usual but not the only cause of thinning eyebrows. Other causes of permanent hair loss in the eyebrow region involve aggressive eyebrow hair tweezing, burns, trauma, alopecia areata (which can occur anywhere), and even leprosy. The cosmetic effect especially on a young woman can be devastating.
Eyebrow Hair Transplant
Eyebrows can be recreated using donor follicles located in the DHT-resistant donor portion of the scalp. The donor hairs are taken from just behind the ear or the high neck region where the hair most closely simulates the hair color and texture of eyebrows. These follicles are divided up into tiny grafts containing one or two hairs in each. The small grafts are then placed into micro-incisions which are made in the thinned area. The use of such tiny grafts is an extremely important component in recreating natural looking eyebrows. Another important factor that becomes paramount to success in eyebrow hair restoration is the hair growth angle. Eyebrow hairs grow at less than a fifteen-degree angle above the skin, almost parallel with it. In addition, it is vital to realize that in each eyebrow, hair direction will vary with the portion of the eyebrow.
Proper donor selection, microscopic dissection of the grafts, micro-incisions, close attention to growth angles and growth direction allow for the recreation of full, natural looking eyebrows.
Medical Treatment: Minoxidil
Eyebrow Hair Restoration Treatments
Sometimes eyebrow hair loss can treated simply with OTC medication such as Minoxidil. You can try by applying a small amount to thinning areas once or twice each day. This is an acceptable first step that very well may grow back hair in the eyebrows. If topical medication does work to reverse hair loss it may take take 6-9 months to see regrowth. Hair transplantation may be an option for those who do not respond to medical treatment. As always it is best to consult with your physician or a Hair Restoration Surgeon before treatment.
